To ask the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will state the number of Chinese in the Transvaal and on their way there respectively in January, 1905 and 1906; and the number of licences issued, and the date when they were issued, in each of the months of 1905.

(Answered by Colonel Seely.) In January, 1905, there were 27,222 Chinese in the Transvaal, and in January, 1906, 47,166. I cannot say how many were then on the way. The licences granted for each month in 1905 were as follows:—January, 4,225; February, 5,374; March, 0; April, 1,931; May, 3,477; June, 2,285; July, 1,529; August, 2,221; September, 0; October, 2,351; November, 13,199; December, 3,000. The licences issued in November were all issued between 12th and 18th November.
