HC Deb 05 May 1908 vol 188 cc60-1
SIR HENRY CRAIK (Glasgow and Aberdeen Universities)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether periodical reports are made by the thirty-seven officers upon whom, in addition to other duties, the supervision of the 1,137 motor omnibuses in London rests, and by the ordinary police constables, as to the interruption of traffic or nuisance of noise, smell, or vibration caused by these omnibuses; and whether such reports afford any basis of comparison in these respects between the omnibuses of the different companies.

MR. GLADSTONE

Reports are not furnished at fixed intervals, but cases of breakdown, excessive noise, vibration, and offensive exhaust which come to the notice of the police are reported, and the particulars furnished no doubt afford some basis of comparison between the omnibuses of the various companies so far as defects are concerned.

SIR HENRY CRAIK

What is the result of the comparison?

MR. GLADSTONE

It is well known that some companies' buses make more noise than others.

SIR HENRY CRAIK

Which?

MR. GLADSTONE

I think I had better not state which.
