HC Deb 05 May 1908 vol 188 c43
MR. REES (Montgomery Boroughs)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India whether the Government of India proposes to construct an approach to Calcutta from the Bengal coal fields, such as the Bishenpore-Howrah line.

THE UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (MR. BUCHANAN,) Perthshire, E.

So far as I am aware there is no present intention of constructing the Bishenpore-Howrah chord or any other additional line of railway between Calcutta and the Bengal coal fields. No provision for such a line is made in the Railway Programme of the Government of India for the years 1908–11.
