HC Deb 26 March 1908 vol 186 cc1564-5
MR. MACKARNESS (Berkshire, Newbury)

I beg to ask the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he can say how many Chinese labourers have been deported to China, under Section 26 of the Transvaal Ordinance, 1904, on account of disease and physical infirmity; and how far the effect of this section has been taken into account in arriving at the comparative rates of mortality of the Chinese and Kaffirs working in the gold mines.

*MR. CHURCHILL

I understand that the total number of Chinese repatriated up to date as physically unfit is 4,783. The figures of mortality show only deaths on the Rand, and deaths either of Chinese or Kaffirs, who have left the Rand are not included.

MR. MACKAENESS

Are Kaffirs deported in the same way?

*MR. CHURCHILL

There is no law providing for it as in the case of the Chinese.
