HC Deb 18 March 1908 vol 186 cc572-3
MR. SMEATON

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade, whether his attention has been called to the fact that so-called Brussels carpets are now largely manufactured in England and sold in the Belgian market at prices considerably lower than the prices for which the same carpets can be produced in Belgium; and whether he has any official information showing the circumstances which enable the British manufacturers to undersell the manufacturers of Belgium in their own market.

MR. LLOYD - GEORGE

Brussels carpets have been made in this country for many years. I have no official information which would enable me to answer the last part of the Question, and if I had, it might not be politic to make it public.

MR. MYER () Lambeth, N

Is it not a fact that a large quantity of raw material is imported into this country, manufactured here, and re-exported to the country from which the raw material came?

[No Answer was returned.]
