HC Deb 02 June 1908 vol 189 c1713
MR. WEIR (Ross and Cromarty)

I beg to ask the Postmaster-General, having regard to the fact that there has been an increase of more than 100 per cent. in the correspondence and parcels dealt with at the Stornoway post office during the space of ten years succeeding the introduction of the Jubilee postal reforms, can he see his way to place a faster and better steamer on the Stornoway service.

THE POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Mr. SYDNEY BUXTON,) Tower Hamlets, Poplar

I carefully considered the question, but I regret that I find the increase in the cost of the postal service in the Stornoway district during the last ten years has been even greater than the increase in the revenue, and as the service is at present maintained at a heavy loss to the Post Office, I should not be justified in incurring additional expense to secure the employment of a faster steamer.
