HC Deb 21 July 1908 vol 192 cc1712-3
MR. J. MACVEAGH (Down, S.)

I beg to ask the Postmaster-General whether he can explain the item, Stock purchased with money received in respect of forfeited deposits in the Post Office Savings Banks (page 86 of Finance Accounts of the United Kingdom); and whether he can explain under what circumstances the deposits were forfeited.

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Mr. LLOYD-GEORGE,) Carnarvon Boroughs

This stock was purchased by the National Debt Commissioners with money forfeited under the provisions of Section 12 (1) of the Savings Bank Act, 1891. The amount forfeited was in respect of some thirty-one cases reported during the year, where the depositor had more than one Savings Bank account, and the amount in the combined accounts exceeded £200—the maximum on which interest can be credited under the Savings Banks Acts.
