HC Deb 09 July 1908 vol 192 cc72-3
DR. RUTHERFORD (Middlesex, Brentford)

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Education whether he is now able to say whether he has directed the Wiltshire education authority to provide at once a temporary council school, in order to supply the deficiency of school places at Westbury Leigh; and whether he has declined to sanction the proposal to provide a second Church school for a population which is predominantly Nonconformists.

THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION (Mr. RUNCIMAN,) Dewsbury

It is not proposed to provide a second Church School but to enlarge the existing school by fifty-four places. The local education authority are unwilling to build a council school, and as additional accommodation is required the Board have decided that, in view of Section 9 of the Education Act, 1902, they have no alternative but to sanction the enlargement. I may add that the Board have satisfied themselves that there is sufficient accommodation in undenominational schools within easy reach for all children whose parents desire it.
