HC Deb 09 July 1908 vol 192 cc71-2
MR. SUMMERBELL

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade if he is aware that, in the Report on the cost of living of the working classes issued by his Department, under the head Sunderland, page 449, the rents in the Harrison Buildings, which are situated in the eastern and most densely populated portion of the borough, are stated to be two rooms 3s. 9d. and 4s. per week, and three rooms 4s. 9d. and 5s. per week, whereas on page 450 it is stated that the rents generally charged in the other and better parts of the town are two rooms 2s. 6d. to 3s. 6d., and three rooms 3s. 6d. to 5s.; and whether he will make further inquiries in regard to the matter with a view to correction.

THE POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Mr. SYDNEY BUXTON,) Tower Hamlets, Poplar

No doubt the points referred to in the Question will be taken into account when the Board of Trade make further inquiry into the cost of living at Sunderland.

MR. SUMMERBELL

When will the Board of Trade make further inquiry?

MR. SYDNEY BUXTON

No doubt they will complete the inquiry on which they are now engaged before reopening any case.
