HC Deb 06 July 1908 vol 191 cc1214-5
MR. COURTHOPE (Sussex, Rye)

To ask the Secretary of State for War whether the Government of Canada have decided to re-arm the Canadian Militia with the Ross rifle in place of the Lee-Enfields now in use; whether this change is being made owing to the superiority of the Ross rifle: and whether thorough trials or tests have been carried out with the Ross rifle in this country, and with what result.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Haldane.) The Canadian Government is completing the arming of its Militia with the Ross rifle. The reasons for the adoption of this rifle by the Canadian Government are not known. The rifle was thoroughly tested in this country, and was not considered superior to the Lee-Enfield rifle.
