HC Deb 27 February 1908 vol 185 cc39-40
MR. O'GRADY

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India whether his attention has been drawn to the riot that occurred between two rival sects of Mahomedans at Bombay; whether he can state the actual number of police injured, the number of rioters killed and injured, and the number of non-rioters killed and injured; by whose authority did European officers unconnected with the police fire on the rioters; and whether any steps were taken to safeguard ordinary pedestrians from the effects of firing by police and European officers.

MR. MORLEY

I have no knowledge of any rioting at Lucknow. I presume the hon. Member had in mind the rioting reported from Bombay on 13th February. Eight police were wounded, three very seriously, while five rioters were killed and five are known to have been wounded. One non-rioter looking on from a house was killed by a stray bullet. No European officer unconnected with the police was present. The police officers who used revolvers did so by order of the Commissioner of Police. As for safeguarding ordinary pedestrians, I hardly see how it is to be expected in the confusion of an angry riot.
