HC Deb 17 February 1908 vol 184 cc434-5
MR. MACKARNESS (Berkshire, Newbury)

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade whether he can state the result of the inquiry into the condition of the Great Western Railway station at Newbury which he promised to make in July last; and what steps have been taken by the railway company in consequence of it.

THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE (Mr. LLOYD-GEORGE,) Carnarvon Boroughs

Colonel Yorke visited this station in August last and reported that the accommodation was quite inadequate for the present traffic. The Board of Trade were informed that the Company had already approved plans for the reconstruction of the station on the most modern lines at an estimated cost of £60,000, but there have been difficulties in the way of the acquisition of the necessary land. These difficulties have now I understand been removed and the work is being put in hand at once.
