SIR GILBERT PARKER (Gravesend)

I beg to ask the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies how many retrenched Transvaal Civil servants have received appointments in the Colonial service since the granting of responsible government to the Transvaal; how many have been given appointments in other departments of State in the same time; and how many have received appointments in the Colonial service and in other departments since the beginning of this session of Parliament.

COLONEL SEELY

Fourteen retrenched Transvaal Civil servants, including members of the South African Constabulary, have received appointments in the Colonial service since the grant of responsible government; in two cases appointments have been offered and not accepted, and in one case a candidate was pronounced medically unfit after an appointment had been offered to him; six further appointments are at present being offered. Three appointments have been given by other departments of the State. Nine appointments have been made since the present session began, and six are at present being offered.
