To ask the Secretary to the Treasury what was the average increase in salary, during the last twelve months, on promotion of Customs lower section clerks to clerks upper section, and of assistants to second class examining officers, respectively; and whether any revision of the scale of pay is in contemplation.

(Answered by Mr. Runciman.) The average increase in salary, during the year ending the 31st ultimo, of clerks of the second class, lower section, promoted to the upper section, was £82. 6s., and of assistants promoted to second-class examining officers was £11 10s. No revision of the scale is in contemplation.
