To ask the Secretary of State for War whether military warrants are issued to the railway and shipping companies for the conveyance of soldiers and civilians employed on the Ordnance Survey; and whether the charges for the conveyance of those passengers are debited against Army Votes.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Haldane.) Military warrants are issued for the conveyance of soldiers belonging to the Survey Companies of Royal Engineers only in connection with their military training, and the charges are debited to Army Funds. Conveyance in connection with survey duties is arranged for by the Director General of Ordnance Survey, a separate form of warrant, chargeable † See (4) Debates, clxxi., 1816–7. against the Survey Vote, being issued for the conveyance.
