To ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether he is aware that the Roscommon County Council passed a resolution on the 1st June to the effect that the only possible method of dealing with the grazing system of Ireland was for the people to take the ‡ See page 813. matter into their own hands by pre-venting the grazing ranches from being again occupied by the herds belonging to the banks and Jews in Ireland, and resolving to start a defence fund for the protection of persons under such advice; and whether His Majesty's Government will take, or have taken, any action in regard to this.

(Answered by Mr. Birrell.) The Government have no information upon the subject of the resolution referred to in. the Question beyond that derived from newspaper reports. Local authorities have no power to contribute from the rates to any such defence fund as is mentioned.
