I beg to ask the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies when it is proposed to put an end to the legal status of slavery in Mombassa and the East African Protectorate.

At the same time may I ask the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is in a position to make any statement with regard to the measures proposed in connection with the abolition of the legal status of slavery in the Zanzibar coast strip and the complete abolition of slavery in the islands.

The legal status of slavery in the Zanzibar coast strip will be abolished on 1st October next, and the House will be asked in due course to vote the amount required to meet the compensation awarded by the courts. With regard to the latter part of the hon. Member's Question I must refer him to my right hon. friend the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
