HC Deb 26 August 1907 vol 182 cc127-8
MR. W. T. WILSON (Lancashire, Westhoughton)

To ask the Postmaster-General whether a system of sorting letters for despatch has been introduced into certain sub-offices in the Manchester postal district with the object of relieving the pressure of work at the head office; whether this will impose more work and expense upon the sub-postmasters; and, if so, whether it is his intention to remunerate those sub-postmasters who are paid by commission for the extra work and responsibilities the now system will involve.

(Answered by Mr. Sydney Buxton.) In order to relieve the pressure at the Manchester head office on the night mail despatch, certain sub-postmasters have been instructed to separate their correspondence into a few simple divisions. The arrangement is at present experimental; if authorised permanently the sub-postmasters concerned will receive the usual remuneration provided in the scale of payment for such work.
