HC Deb 26 August 1907 vol 182 cc141-2
MR. WATT (Glasgow, College)

To ask the Secretary for Scotland whether he is aware that the Hebrew chair in Glasgow University is not open to candidates other than ordained ministers of the Established Church of Scotland; if so, whether this system has his sanction, in view of the fact that part of the salary is paid out of Parliamentary grants; and whether he will take steps to abolish this test for teachers.

(Answered by Mr. Sinclair.) I am aware of the position as stated by my hon. friend, but no change can be effected without legislation; and I am not prepared to give any undertaking on the subject.

and there is no justification for the serious charges which have been made against them.
