HC Deb 26 November 1906 vol 165 c1234
* MR. REES (Montgomery Boroughs)

I beg to ask the Prime Minister whether Governors of Colonies and Dependencies are appointed for a fixed term of years, or whether no such term is stated, but that such officers vacate when their successors are, after a more or less customary interval, appointed.

MR. RUNCIMAN

The Colonial regulation is worded as follows:—"Governors are appointed under the Sign Manual and Signet. Every such person is appointed during his Majesty's pleasure, but his tenure of office is, as a rule, confined to a period of six years from the assumption of his duties."

MR. SWIFT MACNEILL (Donegal, S.)

Although the limit is six years the general tenure is only five.
