HC Deb 12 November 1906 vol 164 c1048
COLONEL LOCKWOOD

I beg to ask the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies why officers in the majority of out-stations (viz., provincial headquarters) in Northern Nigeria have no houses provided for them, but have to use native mud huts.

MR. CHURCHILL

The construction of solidly built houses in the remoter stations in Northern Nigeria is being steadily proceeded with, in the face of great difficulties owing to lack of transport and of local building material. It is understood that improved houses have now been constructed, or are in process of construction, at most of the provincial headquarters. Pending their construction, officers are provided with houses built in the native fashion, which in many cases it would be misleading to call "mud huts," as they have been designed to accommodate Europeans and are not uncomfortable.
