HC Deb 07 November 1906 vol 164 c525
DR. HAZEL

To ask the Secretary of State for India whether he will explain why Mr. J. A. Chapman, recently a clerk in an exchange bank, has been confirmed in the appointment of principal of the Calcutta Madrassah, in view of the pledges given to the House that his appointment was a temporary one, which would presumably terminate when Dr. Ross, the permanent incumbent, returned to Calcutta on the conclusion of a two months' deputation on special duty at Simla.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Morley) It is not the ease that Mr. Chapman has been confirmed as principal of the Calcutta Madrassah. He has, as I previously stated, been acting temporarily during the absence of Dr. Denison Ross, and his officiating tenure has now, I believe, come to an end.
