HC Deb 01 November 1906 vol 163 c1324
MR. SUMMERBELL (Sunderland)

I beg to ask the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies if his attention has been called to the starvation due to unemployment existing at Trinidad; and, if so, what action the Government has taken, especially in relation to the demand for labour by the Isthmian Canal Commission and the importation of labourers from India to compete with the West Indian labourers.

MR. CHURCHILL

I am not aware that there is any such distress as the hon. Member refers to, resulting from want of employment in Trinidad; but in view of the private communications I have received from the hon. Member an inquiry will be addressed to the Governor on the subject.
