HC Deb 07 May 1906 vol 156 c979
Mr. SUMMERBELL (Sunderland)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if his attention has been called to the difference of pay existing between the subordinate ranks of the convict and local prisons; and whether it is his intention to go into the matter with a view to some improvement taking place in the remuneration of those employed in local prisons.

MR. GLADSTONE

A large number of petitions on this subject have been received from the warders of local prisons, and are now under consideration. They raise questions of importance and difficulty which cannot be hastily settled; and I can only say that they will receive the most careful consideration from the Prison Commissioners and from myself.
