HC Deb 28 March 1906 vol 154 cc1278-9
MR. O'MALLEY (Galway, Connemara)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland if his attention has been drawn to the action of the Local Government Board in withholding their sanction to the holding of a concert, under the auspices of the Gaelic League, in the dining hall of the Oughterard workhouse, although the proceeds of the concert are partly for the benefit of the workhouse children; and whether he proposes to take any action in the matter. † See (4) Debates, clii, 797.

MR. BRYCE

The Local Government Board have informed the Board of Guardians of Oughterard Union that, having regard to the legal decision in the case of the Attorney-General v. Middleton Guardians, they considered that they had no power to sanction the use of the workhouse premises for any person which is unconnected with the administration of the poor laws.

MR. O'MALLEY

The Local Government Board actually sanctioned a concert there a little while ago.
