HC Deb 27 March 1906 vol 154 cc1057-8
MR. HICKS BEACH (Gloucestershire, Tewkesbury)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War whether it is proposed to withdraw the whole of the troops at present stationed in the island of St. Helena, to dismount the guns, and leave the island entirely unprotected; or whether it is intended to revert to the plan of quartering there a battalion or half-battalion of the West India Regiment, together with detachments of Royal Engineers, Army Service Corps, Army Ordnance Corps, and Royal Army Medical Corps.

MR. HALDANE

It is intended to withdraw the whole of the garrison, but arrangements will be made for the despatch of a garrison in case of war. The question of the disposal of the guns is under consideration. There is no intention of sending any of the West India Regiment there.
