MR. CATHCART WASONI beg to ask the Secretary for Scotland if he can state how many existing teachers accepted The Superannuation Act, 1898, and how many declined to accept it; what amount existing teachers who accepted the Act will receive by way of retiring allowance, and what would be the cost to the Department of supplementing that amount by a sum sufficient to raise the retiring allowance to that considered adequate by the department for certificated teachers.
§ MR. SINCLAIRSeven thousand five hundred and sixty-two "existing teachers" accepted the Act and 3,238 declined to accept it. The retiring allowance is calculated according to the length of service in each case. It is not possible 933 to form the estimate asked for in the last clause of the hon. Member's Question.
