§ MR. EDWARD BARRYTo ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether any steps will be taken to repeal Section 6, Sub-section 1, of The Local Government Amendment Act (Ireland), 1902 (2 Edward 7, c. 38); and whether requests have been received from several unions for the repeal of it on the ground of the loss caused to them.
(Answered by Mr. Bryce.) The object of the section in question was to secure an equitable participation in the Local Taxation Grant by rich and poor unions alike. The subsequent experience of the Local Government Board has, in their opinion, proved that the legislation in question has been beneficial to the poorer unions, by preventing a diminution in the help afforded to them; and, as at present advised, His Majesty's Government do not intend to take any steps for its repeal. The Board have received requests for the repeal of the section from some unions.
