HC Deb 07 March 1906 vol 153 cc431-2
MR. HILLS (Durham)

To ask the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, in view of the rates of mortality among natives employed in the Transvaal gold mines, coming from British Central Africa, Rhodesia, Mozambique, and Damaraland, further recruiting of labourers from those regions will be stopped.

(Answered by Mr. Churchill.) I have to refer the hon. Member to the statement at page 44 of 2819, from which he will see that it is proposed to stop recruiting from certain tropical areas, unless the mortality returns show marked improvement. Damaraland was closed as a recruiting area last year by the German Government.
