HC Deb 26 June 1906 vol 159 cc780-1
MR. FLYNN (Cork, N.)

I beg to ask Mr. Attorney-General for Ireland whether he is aware that, of the nine magistrates appointed in the county of Cork from May, 1905, to March, 1906, eight are Protestant Gentlemen and only one Catholic; and whether, in view of this disparity, representations will be made to the Lord Chancellor to appoint some of the gentlemen who have recently been recommended by district councils and other popularly elected bodies.

THE ATTORNEY-GENERAL FOR IRELAND (Mr. CHERRY,) Liverpool, Exchange

I am not aware, except from what the hon. Member tells me, of the religious beliefs of the gentlemen appointed to the Commission of the Peace in the county of Cork during the period mentioned in the Question. The appointments referred to, I am informed, were all made before the present Government came into office. Any representations which I may receive from district councils or other elected bodies recommending the appointment of gentlemen to the Commission of the Peace, I shall with pleasure submit to the Lord Chancellor, and I am sure that he will give them his most favourable consideration.
