CAPTAIN CRAIGI beg to ask the Secretary of State for War whether advantage has been taken of the experience gained in the South African campaign, and of the war between Japan and Russia, to construct a scheme whereby on the outbreak of war, if necessary, the working of railways will be efficiently carried out by a special military staff; and, if not, will he consider the advisability of instituting a department for the training of officers in the working of railways during war.
§ MR. HALDANEAs the result of the experiences gained in recent war a railway branch has been formed as the War Office under the Quartermaster-General. The necessary organisation for the working of railways in time of war in concert with the civil railway staff is receiving careful consideration.
