HC Deb 02 July 1906 vol 159 cc1393-4
MR. DELANY

To ask the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that extensive damage has been done to residents along the Great Southern and Western Railway (Ireland) in consequence of sparks flying from their engines igniting hay, straw, and dwelling-houses situated adjacent to the line; whether he is aware that the company are using new and powerful locomotives, without the necessary safeguards to control sparks being attached; and will he see that proper restrictions shall be enforced to protect the property of those living along the line.

(Answered by Mr. Lloyd-George.) No complaint of the damage referred to by the hon. Member has been received by the Board of Trade, but in any case the Department have no powers which would enable them to take the action suggested.
