To ask the Secretary to the Treasury what excesses in the average salaries of certificated elementary school teachers in Great Britain, above £119 13s. 3d. in the case of men and £76 11s. 9d. in the case of women, have been from time to time certified by the Education Department to the Treasury since the passing of the Teachers Superannuation Act of 1898; what increases of the ratio of contribution to the deferred annuity fund of £3 in the case of men and £2 in the case of women have been made in consequence of such excesses; and what are the present average salaries and rates of contribution to the deferred annuity fund in the case of men and women teachers respectively.

(1) The following excesses in the average salaries of certificated elementary school teachers in Great Britain above £119 13s. 3d. in the case of men, and £76 11s. 9d. in the case of women, have been certified by the Education Departments to the Treasury since the passing of the Teachers Superannuation Act of 1898, viz—

English teachers:—

(2)The following increases have been made in the teachers' contributions to the deferred annuity fund in consequence of the above excesses, viz.:—

English teachers:—

Men, 5s. from 1st April, 1905.

Women, 4s. from 1st April, 1901.

Scotch teachers:—

Men, 5s. from 1st April, 1901.

†Men, 10s. from 1st April, 1902.

(3) The present average salaries of elementary school teachers, and their rates of contribution to the deferred annuity fund are, according to the latest returns, as follows, viz.:—
