To ask the Secretary of State for War what is the cost per rifle to the Government of the present service rifle when made in Government factories and when made by private contractors for the Government, respectively.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Arnold-Forster.) The figures for the present long rifle for 1903–4 were: — Ordnance Factories, £2 14s. 4¼d.; Trade, £310s. 0.1., and these prices are exclusive of cost of inspection and other Departmental expenses. The figures for the short rifle were given in reply to the hon. Member for the Epping Division of Essex on the 21st instant.†
