HC Deb 13 March 1905 vol 142 cc1178-9
GENERAL LAURIE (Pembroke and Haverfordwest)

To ask the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that notice of discharge has been given to employees in the Barracks Department on the ground that they formerly served in the Army; and whether, in carrying out the policy of placing the department under a civilian head, it is also his decision that men who have served their country as soldiers are disqualified for employment in this department.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Arnold-Forster.) Works under the Military Works Loans are reaching completion at twenty stations on or before the 31st March next. A considerable amount of the work done under these loans is carried out by temporary employees, and accordingly a number of these will no longer be required. The reply to both points raised in the Question is in the negative.
