§ DR. MACNAMARAI beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he can state the total adult white male population in the Rand district according to the last census, and the total number of indentured Chinese coolies now in the same area; and also the total number of Chinese coolies which it is contemplated will be in the Rand by the close of June.
§ MR. LYTTELTONThe Census Returns received up to date do not show the white adult male population on the Rand. The total white male population was 73,434. The number of Chinese at the end of January was 27,222. I believe the number now on the Rand is about 33,000. I am informed that at the end of January the total number for which the labour importation agency had received application was 54,862 (including those already introduced).
