HC Deb 02 March 1905 vol 142 cc164-5
MR. CATHCART WASON (Orkney and Shetland)

To ask the Lord-Advocate if the Secretary for Scotland will cause; inquiry to be made as to the number of wrecks and lives lost during this last winter round the North Isles, Orkney, and the desirability of establishing a coastguard station at Sanday, equipped with a rocket life-saving apparatus.

(Answered by Mr. Gerald Balfour.) I have inquired into this question, and find that two vessels stranded on the island of Sanday this winter, and about sixteen lives were lost. It is doubtful whether a rocket apparatus would have been of any service in these cases, but I will make further inquiries, and inform the hon. Member of the result.
