HC Deb 20 July 1905 vol 149 c1390
MR. DOOGAN

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether, on 1st instant, at Coal-island, John McManus was assaulted in the presence of the police and a number of civilians by Robert Roach and Joseph Marshall; and, if so, can he explain why MacManus was summoned and fined, whilst no proceedings were taken against his assailants.

MR. WALTER LONG

McManus, who was drunk, deliberately obstructed a drumming party, and after being removed by the police, attempted to repeat the obstruction, whereupon he received a blow from one of the party. McManus was prosecuted and fined for drunkenness. He informed the police that he himself would prosecute for the assault. The police do not intend to prosecute, having regard to the trivial nature of the assault, and to the fact that McManus was the aggressor.
