HC Deb 27 February 1905 vol 141 cc1321-2
MR. WEIR

I beg to ask the Lord-Advocate whether he is aware that the Scottish Education Department recently declined to allow the Renfrew Landward School Board to engage Laura Agnes Hood as a pupil teacher on the ground that she had not been successfully vaccinated; will he explain why this veto was imposed, especially having regard to the fact that the Code of Regulations issued by the Department does not indicate that successful vaccination is a necessary condition of appointment; and will he state why a pupil teacher who has had small pox is not accepted as eligible for appointment unless successfully vaccinated.

MR. SCOTT DICKSON

It is the fact that the Department declined to recognise the girl named in the Question as a pupil teacher on the ground that she had not been vaccinated. The rule on which this decision was based is a general one, imposed in the interests of the health of the children. As regards the last part of the Question, no case of the kind referred to has as yet called for the Department's decision.
