HC Deb 31 May 1904 vol 135 cc430-1
MR. BOLAND

To ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether any change has taken place within recent years in the Law of Malta as regards Press offences; whether the right of trial by jury has been abolished in such cases; if so, can he state the date on which such change was made; and how many cases of this nature have been tried since that date by a Judge without a jury.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Lyttelton.) The Law of Malta as regards Press offences is contained in Ordinance No. XIV. of 1889, and there has been no amendment in the Law since that date, Criminal actions under the Law in question have always been tried by a Judge and jury, and civil actions by a Judge without a jury.
