HC Deb 05 May 1904 vol 134 cc530-1
MR. SEYMOUR ORMSBY-GORE (Lincolnshire, Gainsborough)

To ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland if he is aware that Mr. W. M'Gifford, of Hillsborough, county Down, whose aid was invoked by the police during the riot on Sunday. 17th April, at Lisburn, was subsequently accidentally batoned by them, receiving injuries which necessitated immediate surgical attendance; and whether it is proposed to give him adequate compensation.

(Answered by Mr. Wyndham.) Mr. M'Gifford, though he was asked to use his influence in preserving the peace, does not appear to have rendered the police any assistance. Indeed, after declining to assist them, he identified himself, at least by his presence, with the section of the crowd from whom the most violent and persistent stone-throwing proceeded. Under these circumstances there does not appear to be ground for compensation in respect of an injury to which M'Gifford exposed himself.
