HC Deb 02 May 1904 vol 134 c103
Dr. FARQUHARSON (Aberdeenshire, W.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War whether he has been able to effect any improvement in the pay and position of the Army nurses.

The SECRETARY of STATE FOR WAR (Mr. ARNOLD-FORSTER,) Belfast, W.

A Royal Warrant will shortly be issued under which the salary of a nurse is fixed at £40 a year, rising to £45 a year, instead of £30 to £35 as at present; whilst the pay of the higher classes of sister, matron, and principal matron are correspondingly increased. Under the new regulations the matron-in-chief will receive £300 a year, rising to £350. The pensions depend on the rates of pay, and are accordingly increased in proportion.
