MR. WEIR (Ross and Cromarty)

pound in excess of the amount due for income-tax on that date, will he state how much of the money thus overpaid has since been refunded by the Inland Revenue to stockholders.

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Mr. AUSTEN CHAMBERLAIN,) Worcestershire, E.

As the hon. Member has already been informed, † repayment has been granted in every case in which application (supported by the necessary evidence) has been made. I am informed that to compute the amount thus refunded would involve a great deal of labour and it would not, I think, serve any useful purpose.

MR. WEIR

Am I to understand that this information cannot be obtained in a few minutes?

MR. AUSTEN CHAMBERLAIN

Yes; the hon. Member is to understand it cannot be obtained with the ease he thinks.
