HC Deb 09 March 1904 vol 131 c566
MR. WEIR (Ross and Cromarty)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War, having regard to the fact that the estimated expenditure for stationery and printing for the Army is given under Class 2, Vote 23, as £140,000 for 1904–5, the same sum as the previous year, will he consider the expediency of ordering some inquiry with a view to ascertain whether it is practicable to effect a saving under this head.

MR. ARNOLD-FORSTER

The sum of £140,000 does not represent the total Estimate for 1903–4, which, with Supplementary Estimates, after deducting Appropriations in Aid, came to about £157,000. There is no reason to suppose that the sums provided for 1904–5 will be insufficient. Every effort is, and will be made to cut down expenditure under this head, and there would appear to be no need for a special inquiry.
