HC Deb 02 March 1904 vol 130 cc1485-6
DR. FARQUHARSON (Aberdeenshire, W.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War whether he can state the total number of officers and men killed, the number who died of wounds, and the number who died from enteric fever and other diseases during the war in South Africa.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR (Mr. ARNOLD-FORSTER, Belfast, W.)

The figures are as follows—

Officers Warrant, Non-Commissioned Officers and Men.
Killed or died of wounds 719 6,863.
Deaths from Enteric fever 183 7,807.
Deaths from other diseases 223 4,926.
The statistics do not show the killed separately from those who died of wounds, and the compilation of the figures would involve considerable labour.

MR. EUGENE WASON (Clackmannan and Kinross)

inquired how many of those who died of enteric had undergone the process of inoculation.

MR. ARNOLD-FORSTER

replied that he had not that information.
