HC Deb 15 June 1904 vol 136 cc141-2
CAPTAIN DONELAN (Cork County, E.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will grant a Return showing the number and nature of the casualties caused by motor-cars, in Great Britain and Ireland respectively, from 1st June, 1903, to 31st May, 1904.

* THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. AKERS-DOUGLAS, Kent, St. Augustine's)

I have no means of obtaining such a Return for the whole country; but I am making inquiries as to whether information on the point can be obtained for the Metropolitan Police District, where most, if not all, serious motor car accidents come to the notice of the police. If the figures can be compiled, I shall be glad to supply them to the hon. Member.

CAPTAIN DONELAN

May I ask whether any record is kept of the persons killed or injured by these infernal machines?

[No answer was returned.]

MR. SOARES

Do we understand that the right hon. Gentleman will not give a Return?

٭ MR. AKERS-DOUGLAS

I do not think the hon. Member can infer anything of the sort from my answer. I have explained that I shall be prepared to give any information which comes into my possession, but that it is difficult to obtain a Return except from the Metropolitan Police. I will give any information I can get.
