HC Deb 08 June 1904 vol 135 cc1064-5
MR. HUNTER CRAIG (Lanarkshire, Govan)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will grant a Return showing the total number of lunatics in the lunatic asylums in the United Kingdom who have lost their reason through excessive use of intoxicating liquor.

*MR. AKERS-DOUGLAS

The question of the causes to which cases of insanity can be attributed is a very difficult one. It is frequently dealt with in the Annual Reports of the Lunacy Commissioners, which give full information on the subject. In particular, I may refer my hon. friend to pages 9 and 158 to 159 of the last Report for the year 1902.
