HC Deb 01 June 1904 vol 135 cc497-8
MR. YOXALL (Nottingham, W.)

To ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is now able to communicate to the House the result of the friendly intervention of the High Commissioner of Cyprus in connection with the vacant Archbishopric of Cyprus; and what steps, if any, have been taken to nominate a successor to the late Bishop of Paphos.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Lyttelton.) I regret to inform the hon. Member that the offer of the High Commissioner's good offices has had no satisfactory result, and that he reports that it would be difficult to intervene in any way without wounding the consciences of either one party or the other. A successor to the late Bishop of Paphos was nominated in 1901, but the validity of the nomination was disputed, and no consecration has taken place.
