HC Deb 12 August 1904 vol 140 c396
MR. JOSEPH DEVLIN

To ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether the travelling and other incidental expenses of Dr. Starkie, while accompanying Messrs. Dale and Stephens on business exclusively of intermediate schools, were paid out of money voted by Parliament for Irish National Education purposes; and, if so, is it regular to divert any portion of the money voted for such purposes to defraying expenses incurred in connection with the business of the Intermediate Education Board.

(Answered by Mr. Wyndham.) As a matter of fact Dr. Starkie was not exclusively employed on the occasion in the work of inspecting intermediate schools. He inspected primary schools as well, and did not accompany Messrs. Dale and Stephens during the full period of his absence from Dublin. His expenses were defrayed from the Vote for Public Education. † See (4) Debates, cxxxviii., 1341 ‡ See (4) Debates, cxxxix., 989
