§ CAPTAIN NORTON (Newington, W.)To ask the Postmaster-General whether he has received memorials from certain sorters of the East Central section of the General Post Office requesting compensation for the loss of overcoats stolen from the official retiring rooms during November and December, 1903, and February, 1904; and whether a decision has yet been arrived at in the matter.
(Answered by Lord Stanley.) Complaints were received during the period mentioned from certain sorters in the Eastern Central section of the General Post Office of the loss of articles of private clothing, and special inquiry was made in each case, but unfortunately without result. It is not the practice to give compensation in such cases. I regret that the officers in question were not informed to this effect at the time.
